Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) – Overview
A security mechanism that requires users to verify their identity using two or more authentication factors before gaining access to a system, application, or network. MFA significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access by adding additional verification beyond a username and password.
Authentication Factors
MFA combines factors from at least two of the following categories:
Something you know – password or PIN
Something you have – mobile device, authenticator app, hardware security key
Something you are – biometric data such as fingerprint or facial recognition
How MFA Works
The user enters their username and password.
After successful password validation, the system prompts for an additional factor.
Access is granted only after all required factors are successfully verified.
